In Pakistan, most universities use the 4.00 scale for both GPA and CGPA. When you apply for a government job, you often need to convert your CGPA to a percentage because application forms ask for marks percentage, not CGPA.

For example, if you are applying for a job through the FPSC/PPSC Auditor Eligibility Checker, your CGPA is one of the first things they verify. But PPSC does not accept CGPA directly — they require a percentage certificate from your university. That is why converting your CGPA correctly matters.

How to Calculate Percentage from GPA

Learning how to calculate percentage from GPA is one of the most useful skills for a Pakistani student. Whether you are applying for a government job, a scholarship, or a foreign admission, you will need to convert your CGPA into a percentage at some point.

Here is the step-by-step process:

1. Step 1: Check your CGPA on the 4.00 scale. It is printed on your transcript.
2. Step 2: Find which HEC band your CGPA falls into (see the table below).
3. Step 3: Read off the percentage that HEC assigns to that band.

For example, if your CGPA is 3.42, it falls in the 3.34–3.66 band, which HEC assigns 80%. If your CGPA is 3.00, it falls in the 2.67–3.00 band, which HEC assigns 71%.

This is the correct method. Ignore the popular CGPA × 25 shortcut.

Why the CGPA × 25 Shortcut Is Wrong

Many students in Pakistan use the shortcut “CGPA × 25” to convert their CGPA to percentage. It is simple and gives you a number instantly. But here is the truth: this is not the official HEC formula.

HEC uses a grade-band rule, not a flat multiplier. Your CGPA is assigned the minimum percentage of the grade band it falls into. For example, a 3.00 CGPA falls in the B band (2.67–3.00), and HEC fixes that at 71%, not 75%. The gap is real and it matters.

On the CGPA × 25 shortcut, a 3.00 becomes 75%. On the HEC band table, it becomes 71%. That 4-point difference could mean the difference between qualifying for a position and being rejected.

Use CGPA × 25 only for a rough gut-check. For anything official — a job application, a scholarship form, a foreign admission — read the percentage off the HEC band table or off your own transcript.

Official HEC Grade-Band Conversion Table

Here is the official HEC grade-band table for the 4.00 scale. This table is what you should use when converting CGPA to percentage for PPSC, FPSC, or any government job application:

How to Convert Percentage to GPA Out of 4

Converting percentage to GPA out of 4 is the reverse process. You find your percentage in the HEC band table and read off the corresponding CGPA range.

For example:

• 85% or above: Equals a 3.67–4.00 CGPA
• 80%: Equals a 3.34–3.66 CGPA
• 75%: Equals a 3.01–3.33 CGPA
• 71%: Equals a 2.67–3.00 CGPA
• 68%: Equals a 2.34–2.66 CGPA
• 64%: Equals a 2.01–2.33 CGPA

How to Convert Marks to CGPA

Converting marks to CGPA is a two-step process. First, convert your marks to a percentage. Then, find that percentage on the HEC band table to get the equivalent CGPA.

For example, if you scored 71% marks in your degree, that equals a 2.67–3.00 CGPA on the HEC scale. If you scored 85%, that equals a 3.67–4.00 CGPA.

Note that universities and government commissions do not accept marks directly. You must convert marks to percentage first, then to CGPA.

How to Change CGPA into Percentage for PPSC

PPSC does not accept CGPA directly. Candidates must provide a percentage certificate from their university Controller of Examinations. When you request that certificate, the university applies the HEC band table.

For example, if your CGPA is 3.00, your university will issue a certificate stating 71%. If your CGPA is 3.50, the certificate will state 80%. Do not use the CGPA × 25 shortcut on your PPSC application.

How to Calculate CGPA from Semester GPA

If you want to calculate your CGPA from your semester GPAs, you need to use credit hour weighting. The official formula is:

CGPA = Sum of (Credit Hours × Grade Point) / Sum of Credit Hours

Here is an example:

• Semester 1: GPA 3.40, Credit Hours 18
• Semester 2: GPA 3.56, Credit Hours 17
• Semester 3: GPA 3.20, Credit Hours 18
• Semester 4: GPA 3.65, Credit Hours 16

Quality Points: (3.40 × 18) + (3.56 × 17) + (3.20 × 18) + (3.65 × 16) = 237.72

Total Credit Hours: 69

Final CGPA: 237.72 / 69 = 3.44

Common Conversion Mistakes Students Make

Here are mistakes students often make when converting CGPA to percentage:

• Using CGPA × 10: This gives 32% for a 3.20 CGPA, which is completely wrong and makes a strong record look like a failure.
• Using CGPA × 25 without checking HEC bands: This shortcut overstates your percentage. A 3.00 CGPA becomes 75% on the shortcut, but HEC fixes it at 71%.
• Using the wrong scale: Some universities use a 5.00 scale. Make sure you are using the 4.00 scale for HEC conversion.
• Rounding too early: Round only at the final step, not in the middle of the calculation.
• Copying numbers from unverified online tools: Many online calculators use the CGPA × 25 shortcut. Use the HEC band table or our calculator.
